Description: In 1940, the Pepsi-Cola Company completed construction of an $85,000 bottling plant on NE 27th Avenue between Sandy Boulevard and Pacific Avenue. The plant was open to visitors, who could watch the production line in operation, and provided employees with modern comforts, including a recreation room, lockers, and showers. Looking to increase production, the Pepsi-Cola Company purchased four additional lots in 1944 from the city for a post-war expansion. By 1961, the company decided to add 15,000 square feet and hired architects Scott & Payne to complete a $100,000 “high style” addition. Completed in 1962, the addition featured barrel arches, masonry construction, and a geometric panel system; the facility was designed to serve as a warehouse and administrative office center. Additionally, in 1984 the City of Portland’s Historic Resource Inventory assigned this building a Rank II for its likely eligibility for future historic designation.

The site was redeveloped in the first half of the 2020s with two residential buildings, which involved the demolition of much of the 1962 facility. The cross-barrel-arched roof of the volume along Sandy Boulevard was retained for a pavilion, although the brick bulkhead and window assemblies were replaced with new wall systems that approximate the visual character of the original building.
