Description: Beaverton-based architect James Gardiner approached the mundane program of the Lovejoy Medical Building by introducing an expansive louvered steel screen across the majority of the Lovejoy Street façade. The textured but visually uniform screen intersects an elegant, off-center pavilion tower with geometric breeze blocks and barrel-arched roof forms perhaps reminiscent of a nun’s wimple. The careful composition of the façade creates an unexpected and striking Modernist statement in a predominantly residential area of northwest Portland.
